Breast Self Examination: (INFO Breast Cancer)
Learn and practice Breast Self Examination regularly. A regular monthly breast exam will familiarize you with what is normal for your breasts, making it easier to realize any changes that may be occurring. A monthly breast self exam is not a substitute for regular screening mammograms.
Osteoporosis: (National Osteoporosis Foundation)
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist.
Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.
Falls In Older Adults (CDC Center for Disease Control and Prevention)
Falls are among the most common and serious problems facing elderly persons. Falling is associated with considerable mortality, morbidity, reduced functioning and premature nursing home admissions. Falls generally result from an interaction of multiple and diverse risk factors and situations, many of which can be corrected. this interaction is modified by age, disease, and the presence of hazards in the environment. Frequently, older people do not appreciate the seriousness of or report these problems to their physicians and, thus, the problems remain undetected until preventable injury and disability occur.
